Barton will play 8-man football in 2026, a move that will have an impact well beyond the Bears’ program as the high school football season gets underway across Arkansas.

The Barton School District announced it does not have enough senior high players to safely field an 11-man team this fall and is working to transition the Bears to an 8-man schedule.

For Barton, the move allows its players to continue competing rather than canceling the season.

Bryant will begin the 2026 high school football season as the top-ranked team in Arkansas.

The Hornets received all 12 first-place votes in the Overall Top 10 and Class 7A rankings in the 2026 Preseason Arkansas Sports Media High School Football Poll, which is voted on by a panel of sports media members from across the state.

Bryant collected 120 points in the overall poll, followed by Bentonville with 102 and Conway with 101.

Benton and Bentonville West tied for fourth with 57 points apiece, while Shiloh Christian, Greenwood, Joe T. Robinson, North Little Rock and Fayetteville rounded out the Overall Top 10.

Benton received 11 of the 12 first-place votes to lead Class 6A, while Greenwood edged Joe T. Robinson for the top spot in Class 5A. Stuttgart begins the season No. 1 in Class 4A, Fordyce leads Class 3A and Junction City holds the top spot in Class 2A.

Cedar Ridge is the preseason No. 1 team in the 8-man division.

Conway secured the first spot in the championship game of the 2026 Arkansas American Legion AAA State Tournament on Sunday, while Fort Smith stayed alive by eliminating Sheridan to set up a Monday showdown with host Bryant.

Conway remained unbeaten in the tournament by routing Bryant 11-0 in the winners bracket final, while Fort Smith defeated Sheridan 11-5 in an elimination game.

Bryant and Fort Smith will meet at 5 p.m. Monday in the tournament’s final elimination game. The winner will advance to face Conway in the state championship game at 7:30 p.m.

The opening two days of the 2026 Arkansas American Legion AAA State Tournament featured offensive outbursts, comeback victories and dominant pitching performances as five of the state’s top teams battled to keep their championship hopes alive.

Arkansas American Legion baseball’s summer season reaches its final stage Friday as five of the state’s top Senior AAA programs battle for a state championship at Bryant High School.

The five-team, double-elimination tournament begins Friday evening and concludes Tuesday, with Bryant, Cabot, Conway, Fort Smith and Sheridan all vying for the title and an opportunity to advance beyond the state tournament.

The five-team format gives tournament host Bryant a first-round bye, while the other four clubs must survive an opening-round matchup to remain in the winners bracket.

Tournament play opens Friday at 7 p.m. when Sheridan faces Cabot in Game 1. The winner advances to face Bryant at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Game 3, while the loser drops immediately into the elimination bracket.

The tournament’s second opening-round contest will be played Saturday at 5 p.m., matching Fort Smith against Conway in Game 2. The winners of Games 2 and 3 will meet Sunday at 5 p.m. in the winners bracket final with a berth in Monday night’s championship bracket game on the line.

For the teams that suffer an early loss, the road to a championship becomes considerably more difficult.

The losers bracket begins Sunday at 2:30 p.m. with the losers of the opening-round games meeting in Game 4. The winner advances to Sunday’s 7:30 p.m. contest against the loser of Game 3, while Monday’s schedule features another elimination game at 5 p.m. before the undefeated winners bracket champion meets the last remaining team from the losers bracket at 7:30 p.m. in the championship.

If needed, a Tuesday championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m if the team from the losers bracket defeats the team from the winners bracket.

Each of the five teams enters the tournament believing it has the pitching depth and roster to make a championship run, but managing arms over a five-day, double-elimination event will likely be one of the biggest factors in determining the eventual champion.

The 2026 Arkansas American Legion Senior AAA State Tournament runs Friday through Tuesday at Bryant High School, where one team will emerge as state champion after surviving one of the summer’s most demanding postseason formats.

Eligibility rules, football classification, sportsmanship penalties and a complete rewrite of the Arkansas Activities Association handbook are among the issues that will come before member schools when the AAA Governing Body convenes for its annual meeting Monday.

The meeting is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. July 27 at the Statehouse Convention Center in downtown Little Rock. Representatives from member schools across Arkansas will vote on 13 proposals that could affect student-athletes beginning with the 2026-27 school year, while several football-related measures would not take effect until future classification cycles.

Among the most notable proposals are a simplified eligibility rule for junior high and high school students, increased penalties for fighting, revisions to the state’s football competitive equity model and a comprehensive modernization of the AAA Constitution and Bylaws.

The proposals are as follows:

Proposal No. 1 — Intradistrict Participation

The first proposal would create a new rule allowing seventh- and eighth-grade students to participate in classes, academic programs or extracurricular activities at another school within the same district if those opportunities are not available at the school they attend.

The proposal gives local administrators discretion to approve participation as long as the activity is offered at the same competitive level.

Supporters say the change provides flexibility for districts with multiple campuses, allowing students greater access to academic and extracurricular opportunities without transferring schools.

The proposal requires a majority vote, would take effect during the 2026-27 school year and is open to voting by all junior high and middle schools. The AAA Board of Directors unanimously recommended approval on an 18-0 vote.

Proposal No. 2 — Years of Eligibility

One of the most significant proposals would simplify eligibility rules by tying participation directly to a student’s first enrollment in grades seven, eight and nine.

Under the proposal, students would receive one calendar year of eligibility after initially enrolling in seventh grade, one calendar year after initially enrolling in eighth grade and four consecutive calendar years beginning with their first enrollment in ninth grade.

Students repeating seventh or eighth grade would become ineligible until advancing to the next grade level.

According to the proposal, the change eliminates complicated interpretations involving semesters, participation opportunities and previous eligibility determinations by replacing them with clearly defined eligibility periods.

The measure requires a majority vote, applies to all schools and received unanimous support from the Board of Directors.

Proposal No. 3 — Athletic Dead Periods

The AAA is also proposing revisions clarifying both its summer and Christmas athletic dead periods.

Schools would continue observing the mandatory two-week summer dead period during the week before July 4 and the week of July 4, when coaches would be prohibited from conducting practices, workouts, training sessions, competitions or travel with student-athletes. Athletic facilities would remain closed during that period.

The proposal also clarifies that schools possessing the only baseball or softball fields or track facilities within their communities could allow public use during the dead period, provided school teams are not participating and school coaches are not involved.

The proposal also formalizes a three-day Christmas dead period. Schools would choose three consecutive days between Dec. 23-27 during which coaches could not conduct athletic activities and school athletic facilities would be closed.

The Board unanimously recommends approval.

Proposal No. 4 — Junior Varsity Volleyball Limits

Another volleyball proposal would increase scheduling opportunities for junior varsity programs.

Currently, varsity teams are limited to 30 regular-season matches. Under the proposal, junior varsity teams would be permitted to play up to 20 matches.

Junior high varsity teams would remain limited to either 20 matches and two invitational tournaments or 18 matches and three tournaments, while middle schools would continue to be limited to 18 matches.

Supporters say the proposal would improve player development while giving schools additional opportunities to schedule nonconference competition.

The proposal requires a majority vote from high schools and would take effect during the 2026-27 school year.

Proposal No. 5 — Volleyball Benefit Events

A companion volleyball proposal would move the start date for benefit events supporting the AAA Catastrophe Insurance Fund.

Rather than limiting benefit matches to earlier portions of the season, schools would be allowed to hold one varsity-only benefit event between Weeks 6 and 16.

Supporters say the adjustment reflects changes to the volleyball calendar, including expanded regional competition, while providing additional scheduling flexibility and helping reduce player fatigue.

If approved, the change would take effect during the 2027-28 school year and requires a two-thirds constitutional vote.

Proposal No. 6 — AAA Handbook Rewrite (Bylaws)

Member schools will also consider approving an extensive rewrite of the AAA Bylaws.

Association officials say the rewrite modernizes the handbook by updating outdated language, aligning policies with current laws and practices, simplifying rules, improving organization, protecting against litigation and making the handbook easier to understand and reference.

Although the rewrite does not necessarily create sweeping policy changes, it represents one of the most comprehensive organizational updates to the governing document in recent years.

The proposal requires a majority vote and received unanimous approval from the Board of Directors.

Proposal No. 7 — AAA Constitution Rewrite

Closely related to Proposal No. 6, this measure would modernize the AAA Constitution using many of the same objectives.

Association officials say the constitutional rewrite is intended to improve consistency, reflect current practices, simplify administration and provide clearer references throughout the handbook.

Because it amends the Constitution, the proposal requires approval by two-thirds of the voting membership.

The Board unanimously recommends passage.

Proposal No. 8 — Increased Fighting Penalties

The AAA is proposing tougher consequences for fighting by athletes, coaches, administrators and spectators.

Under current rules, most ejections result in missing the next comparable contest.

If approved, anyone ejected for fighting would receive enhanced penalties. A first offense would result in suspension for the next two comparable contests or eight football quarters. A second fighting ejection during the same season would result in suspension for four comparable contests or 16 football quarters.

The proposal also expands the handbook’s definition of fighting to include attempted punches, kicks or strikes regardless of whether contact occurs, as well as unsporting conduct intended to provoke another individual into fighting.

Association officials say the proposal is intended to strengthen sportsmanship and discourage violent conduct.

The Board voted 17-0 to recommend approval.

Proposal No. 9 — Senior Accountability for Fighting

A related proposal would eliminate what some schools view as a loophole for graduating seniors.

Under the proposed rule, seniors ejected for fighting during the final contest of a sport would be required to serve the suspension in the next sport they participate in during the same school year.

Supporters say the proposal ensures seniors remain accountable rather than avoiding penalties simply because their season has ended.

The Board unanimously recommends passage.

Proposal No. 10 — Public School Football Competitive Equity

Perhaps the most debated proposal would create an optional classification adjustment for struggling public-school football programs.

Schools winning 20% or fewer of their conference games in three of the previous four seasons could choose to move down one classification.

To remain in the lower classification, those schools would have to maintain a conference winning percentage below 30% during the following two-year cycle and could not win a state playoff game.

The proposal also limits schools to one classification reduction, applies only to public schools and would not force another school to move up if conferences become larger than eight teams.

Supporters argue some football programs struggle because actual participation numbers are significantly lower than student enrollment figures used for classification.

The AAA Board of Directors, however, voted 18-1 to recommend defeating the proposal, saying schools should compete in the classification assigned by average membership.

If approved, the measure would begin with the 2028-30 classification cycle.

Proposal No. 11 — Act 91 Participation

This proposal addresses students affected by unusual district reorganizations.

The amendment would allow participation opportunities created under Act 91 to continue following Act 919 of the 2025 Regular Session, which allows formation of an isolated school district.

Students whose schools become separated through the legislative process could continue participating with their previously consolidated district when their assigned school does not offer the same academic or extracurricular opportunities.

The Board of Directors issued no recommendation, instead allowing member schools to decide the issue.

Proposal No. 12 — 6A Conference Certification

The proposal would revise postseason qualification procedures for 6A baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball.

Rather than automatically advancing a fixed number of teams from conferences with uneven membership, the proposal would determine state tournament qualifiers using a percentage-based formula designed to keep postseason access relatively equal.

For example, under the proposal, a nine-team conference would qualify seven teams while a seven-team conference would qualify five teams, creating similar qualification percentages.

Supporters say the change promotes competitive equity, transparency and consistency as conference membership fluctuates.

The proposal affects only 6A schools, requires a two-thirds vote and received no recommendation from the Board of Directors.

Proposal No. 13 — Competitive Equity Football Point System

The final proposal would significantly revise the competitive equity model used for non-public school football programs.

The proposal resets current football competitive equity placements before implementing a new point system beginning with the 2028-30 classification cycle.

Rather than accumulating multiple categories of points, schools would receive only the highest point value earned each season. Programs would receive one point for winning or receiving a bye in a state playoff game, two points for reaching the semifinals, three points for advancing to the state championship game and four points for winning a state title.

Programs earning zero or one point could potentially move down one classification, provided they also meet additional competitive requirements. Schools earning between two and five points would remain in their current classification, while programs accumulating six or more points over the two-year evaluation period would move up one classification.

The proposal also limits classification adjustments to one level per cycle and includes transition provisions for schools currently classified more than one level above their enrollment-based placement.

AAA officials say the revised model creates a more balanced method of determining whether non-public football programs should move between classifications based on competitive success rather than enrollment alone.

The Board of Directors voted unanimously to recommend approval.

If adopted, several of the proposals would take effect immediately for the 2026-27 school year, while the football classification changes would be phased in during future competitive cycles. Member schools will decide the fate of all 13 proposals during Monday’s annual Governing Body meeting.

One of the marquee high school football matchups in the country is coming to Arkansas this fall.

Bryant will take on defending national champion St. Frances Academy of Baltimore, Maryland, in the inaugural Patriot Bowl on Sept. 11 at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.

Game organizer Sam Glover, who also directs the King Cotton Holiday Classic basketball tournament, told ArkansasVarsity on Thursday morning that the event will debut this fall at War Memorial Stadium.

The inaugural matchup will pit one of Arkansas’ premier football powers against one of the nation’s most recognizable prep football programs.

Bryant has established itself as a perennial state championship contender and will now have an opportunity to test itself against St. Frances Academy, a national powerhouse that enters the season as the defending national champion.

The Panthers have long been regarded as one of the nation’s elite independent high school football programs, annually producing NCAA Division I talent while competing against some of the country’s toughest schedules.

For Bryant, the game represents another opportunity to showcase Arkansas high school football on a national stage while facing one of the most accomplished programs in the United States.

Additional information, including kickoff time, ticket details and festivities surrounding the inaugural Patriot Bowl, is expected to be announced soon.

Arkansas high school baseball teams will have more flexibility at first base beginning with the 2027 season as the Arkansas Activities Association adopts a series of rule changes approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Among the most notable changes is a new option allowing schools to use either an 18-inch first base or a double first base, both of which are designed to reduce collisions between runners and fielders while maintaining the integrity of the game.

Arkansas Activities Association Associate Executive Director Bobby Swofford said Arkansas schools will follow the NFHS rule changes.

“Yes, we follow 100% of the NFHS rules,” Swofford said. “This will allow schools to use either the double bag or the larger bag at first base.”

The double first base had previously been approved for use beginning in 2027, but the updated rule now gives schools the flexibility to choose either safety base option based on their facilities and resources.

The NFHS said both designs have proven effective in reducing player collisions and enhancing safety at first base.

“The NFHS Baseball Rules Committee believes that providing schools with the option of using either an 18-inch first base or a double first base gives administrators the flexibility to enhance player safety while recognizing the varying needs and resources of member schools,” said Elliot Hopkins, NFHS director of sports and liaison to the Baseball Rules Committee. “Both options are designed to reduce the potential for collisions at first base and support a reduced-risk playing environment without changing the fundamental nature of the game.”

Several additional rule changes will also take effect during the 2027 season.

Coaches will now be permitted to use one-way electronic communication with either the pitcher or catcher to call pitches while remaining in the dugout or bench area. Previously, only the catcher could receive electronic communication from the coach.

Players on the field, however, will continue to be prohibited from using electronic devices such as headphones, wireless communication devices or equipment capable of recording, streaming or transmitting audio or video, except for the approved coach-to-player communication system. Medical devices remain exempt.

Coaches will also be allowed to use handheld electronic scoring devices while in the coach’s box.

The NFHS approved an optional extra-inning tiebreaker that allows games tied after regulation to begin each half-inning with a runner on second base. The runner will be the player scheduled to bat last in that half-inning.

Another equipment change requires eye black to consist of a single solid stroke. Decorative eye black containing words, numbers, logos or other symbols will no longer be permitted.

Looking ahead to 2028, the NFHS also approved expanded bat standards. In addition to bats meeting the current USA Baseball BBCOR .50 standard, certain certified drop-4, drop-5 and drop-6 non-wood bats will also be permitted, provided they display the required permanent certification mark.

“In addition, the NFHS remains committed to fostering the growth and development of high school baseball players,” Hopkins said. “As the game continues to evolve with the adoption of the USA Baseball BBCOR standard, expanding the available drop-weight options provides younger and developing players with additional opportunities to build proper mechanics, confidence and skills while maintaining the safety and performance standards expected in education-based athletics.”

According to the NFHS 2024-25 High School Athletics Participation Survey, baseball remains the nation’s fifth-most popular boys sport with 472,598 participants at 16,110 schools. An additional 1,381 girls also participated in high school baseball during the same school year.

The road from high school baseball to college or professional baseball is becoming increasingly difficult, and for players in Arkansas, the challenge may soon become even greater.

The recruiting landscape has already shifted dramatically because of the NCAA transfer portal. Division I and Division II programs across the country are signing fewer high school players than they did just a few years ago, choosing instead to fill roster spots with older, more experienced players who have already proven themselves at the collegiate level.

Now, another potential change could create an even larger ripple effect throughout amateur baseball.

Major League Baseball has reportedly discussed the possibility of eliminating direct draft eligibility for high school players, a move that would prevent the nation’s top prospects from signing professional contracts immediately after graduation. While the proposal remains under consideration, its impact would extend far beyond the handful of elite players affected.

The top one percent of high school players have traditionally had two options: sign professionally after being drafted or attend college. If that professional pathway disappears, those players would instead enter the college ranks, creating an additional layer of competition in a system that is already becoming increasingly crowded.

The result would be another significant trickle-down effect throughout college baseball recruiting.

College programs would suddenly have access to even more elite talent. Players who previously would have signed professional contracts would now compete for college roster spots, scholarships and playing time. Those athletes would join a transfer portal already overflowing with experienced college players looking for new opportunities.

For high school recruits, the competition would become even more intense.

The reality is that Division I and Division II coaches are already taking fewer high school players because of the portal. Many programs now prefer transfers who have already faced college competition, spent time in strength and conditioning programs and demonstrated success against older players.

A coach evaluating a roster need can often choose between a proven college player and an untested high school senior. More often than not, the transfer portal has become the safer option.

If MLB removes direct draft eligibility for high school players, the number of available opportunities for incoming freshmen could shrink even further.

The recruiting conversation is no longer simply about talent. It is increasingly about development.

College coaches now have larger pools of players to evaluate than ever before. They can afford to be selective and focus heavily on measurable tools such as bat speed, exit velocity, running speed, arm strength, pitching velocity, spin rates, athleticism and physical projection.

For Arkansas athletes, that creates additional challenges.

Arkansas consistently produces talented baseball players, but it remains a smaller state surrounded by some of the nation’s strongest baseball regions. College coaches recruiting the South often spend significant time evaluating players in Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee and Mississippi, all of which have larger populations and deeper pools of prospects.

The competition becomes even greater when Georgia and Florida enter the equation.

Those states benefit from year-round baseball weather, extensive travel-ball networks, private instruction, advanced training facilities and large numbers of players competing at high levels from a young age. College recruiters can attend a single event in Texas, Florida or Georgia and evaluate dozens of players with Division I-level tools in one weekend.

That does not mean Arkansas players cannot compete.

The state continues to produce college and professional talent every year. However, Arkansas prospects often have fewer opportunities to be seen and must work harder to separate themselves from larger recruiting markets that naturally generate more exposure.

As recruiting continues to evolve, local success alone is becoming less valuable.

All-conference honors, all-state selections and impressive high school statistics still matter, but they are no longer enough by themselves. Coaches increasingly want to know how players perform against high-level competition outside their local area.

Can a hitter handle premium velocity? Can a pitcher retire advanced hitters? Does an athlete possess the physical tools necessary to compete at the next level?

Those questions are often answered during summer and fall baseball.

Competing against players from Texas, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee and other baseball-rich states allows athletes to measure themselves against broader competition while giving college coaches a more complete evaluation.

Still, exposure is only part of the equation.

Development remains the key.

The players who continue to earn opportunities are those who follow structured development plans, improve their measurable tools and show consistent progress over time. For hitters, that may mean increasing strength, improving bat speed, developing defensive versatility or enhancing throwing velocity. For pitchers, it often involves improving velocity, command, movement and durability.

International baseball continues to raise the bar as well.

In Latin America and other baseball-producing regions, many players begin structured training at young ages and approach development with a professional mindset years before they become eligible to sign. Their progress is tracked through measurable performance data and constant competition.

American players are not necessarily less talented, but they often begin that level of focused development later.

That gap becomes increasingly important as recruiting decisions rely more heavily on analytics, technology and objective performance measurements rather than traditional statistics alone.

For Arkansas families, the message is clear.

The recruiting process has already become more difficult because of the transfer portal. Division I and Division II schools are signing fewer high school players than they once did, and many opportunities that previously existed have shifted toward experienced college transfers.

If MLB ultimately removes the professional option for elite high school players, another wave of talent will enter the college system, creating even greater competition throughout every level of college baseball.

The strongest prospects will continue to earn opportunities. Players with advanced tools, projectable bodies and proven success against quality competition will always be valuable.

But the margin for error is shrinking.

In today’s baseball environment, being one of the best players on a local high school team may no longer be enough. Arkansas athletes must develop earlier, compete against stronger competition and understand exactly where they fit in an increasingly crowded recruiting landscape.

The future of recruiting is being shaped by the transfer portal, player development and potentially by changes to the MLB Draft itself.

For high school players hoping to play at the next level, preparation has never mattered more.

After six seasons leading one of Arkansas’ premier high school football programs, Trey Schucker is stepping away from Arkadelphia to become the new head football coach at Sylvan Hills.

Schucker announced his decision on Thursday, bringing an end to a successful tenure with the Badgers that included multiple deep postseason runs and a strong connection with the Arkadelphia community.

In a statement, Schucker expressed gratitude for his time at Arkadelphia, calling it “an honor and a privilege” to lead the program and its student-athletes.

“The memories I have made here will never be forgotten, and Arkadelphia will forever be a special place,” Schucker said, also thanking the school district, administration, school board, Badger Foundation, parents and community for their support.

Schucker’s departure marks a significant transition for the Badgers, a program that has been among the state’s most consistent contenders during his time on the sidelines.

He said the decision to leave came after “much thought and prayer,” as he prepares to take over at Sylvan Hills, where he will look to build the Bears’ program moving forward.

Schucker and his family also extended well wishes to the Arkadelphia program, expressing confidence in its continued success.

“My family and I wish the Arkadelphia Badger football team and fans much success in the future,” he said.

Sylvan Hills gains a proven head coach with a track record of success, while Arkadelphia now begins the search for its next leader.

Blytheville has named Cross County defensive coordinator Katon Hill as its new head football coach, bringing in a coach with a recent state championship pedigree.

Hill helped lead Cross County to the 2025 Class 2A state championship, anchoring a dominant defense that played a key role in the Thunderbirds’ title run.

In addition to his coaching success, Hill has collegiate playing experience as a former running back at Arkansas State.

Hill now takes over a Blytheville program looking to build toward sustained success, bringing with him championship experience, defensive expertise and strong ties to Arkansas football.

The Greenwood School District has named Jason Gill as the new head football coach of the Bulldogs, promoting a longtime assistant with deep ties to one of Arkansas’ most successful programs.

Gill, who has been with the district since the 2013-14 school year, takes over after serving as defensive coordinator for nearly a decade. He replaces Chris Young, who recently transitioned into a new role as director of student activities and operations.

Gill began his tenure at Greenwood as the head junior high football coach, quickly building a winning program that captured back-to-back conference championships in his first two seasons. He was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2015 under then-head coach Rick Jones.

During his time on staff, Greenwood has been one of the state’s dominant programs, winning state championships in 2017 and 2018 under Jones. After Young became head coach in 2020, Gill remained defensive coordinator as the Bulldogs added state titles in 2020, 2023 and 2024, while also reaching the state championship game in six consecutive seasons.

Gill’s work was recognized in 2024 when he was named the Broyles Award Arkansas High School Assistant Coach of the Year.

Before joining Greenwood, Gill served as defensive coordinator at Rison, where he helped lead the program to state championships in 2000 and 2005. He later became head coach at Mansfield from 2006 to 2012, helping guide the program to its first conference championship in 2010.

“Jason has been instrumental to our success over the past 13 years,” Young said. “His loyalty to Greenwood and commitment to our student-athletes have been evident throughout his career. I look forward to supporting Jason and his staff, and I am excited to see the continued success of our program under his leadership.”

School officials said Gill’s experience, familiarity with the program and commitment to student-athletes made him a natural choice to lead the Bulldogs.

Gill is married to Kim Gill, the recently retired principal of Westwood Elementary School. The couple has two children, Gracen Hobbs, an eighth-grade English teacher at Greenwood Junior High, and Parker Gill, who was recently named defensive coordinator for the Greenwood Junior High football team. The family also includes one granddaughter, Charlotte Hobbs, who will turn one in May.

District officials said they are confident Gill will continue the tradition of success for Greenwood football as he steps into the head coaching role.

Batesville senior Dexter Chapman has rewritten the record books, breaking both the school and Arkansas state records for triples in a single season.

Chapman, a first baseman and outfielder for the Pioneers, surpassed the previous school record of eight triples and the state mark of nine. He currently has 11 triples this season, setting a new record at both levels.

Chapman’s performance has been a key part of Batesville’s success this season, showcasing his speed and ability to drive the ball into the gaps.

Following his high school career, Chapman is set to continue playing at the collegiate level. He has committed to Crowder College, where he will join the program next fall.

Rison junior pitcher Noah Matheson added another milestone to his growing list of accomplishments last week, setting a new school record with 17 strikeouts in a game against McGehee.

Sheridan senior Skylar Sterritt has made history on the softball field, breaking the Arkansas high school record for career stolen bases.

Sterritt recorded her 188th stolen base Tuesday night against Pine Bluff, surpassing the previous record of 187 set by Hannah Bourgeois from 2013 to 2016.

The milestone solidifies Sterritt as the state’s all-time leader in career steals in fastpitch softball, capping off a standout high school career defined by speed and consistency on the basepaths.

With eight regular season games still remaining before the postseason begins, Sterritt will have additional opportunities to extend her record even further.

The White Hall School District has named a familiar face to lead its football program.

Jason Mitchell has been selected as the next head football coach of the Bulldogs following approval by the school board Tuesday night.

Mitchell previously served as interim head coach after the death of former head coach Ryan Mallett. During that time, he led White Hall to a 4-6 overall record, including a 3-5 mark in the 5A Central Conference.

After that season, the district hired Daryl Patton as the full-time head coach. Patton later resigned earlier this year to take an assistant coaching position at Pulaski Academy, reopening the position.

Mitchell, who has strong support within the White Hall community, now takes over the program on a permanent basis.

He joined the Bulldogs’ coaching staff after coming from Pine Bluff as part of Bobby Bolding’s staff, which oversaw one of the most successful periods in program history.

Mitchell will now be tasked with building on that foundation as he takes over the Bulldogs program full time.
