Brawl at State Tournament Game Sparks Scrutiny of England Superintendent’s Response
The 2026 Arkansas High School Basketball State Tournaments concluded with most contests proceeding without incident. However, Saturday’s matchup between Barton and England at Poyen High School ended in controversy following a late-game altercation that escalated into a large on-court fight.
In the final seconds of the game an England player threw a punch, striking a Barton player. The incident quickly escalated into a bench-clearing brawl that required intervention from administrators and multiple law enforcement officers. Authorities worked for an extended period to restore order and clear the gym.
Among those present at the game was England Superintendent Judy Webb Hubbell.
Multiple sources told ArkansasVarsity.com that Hubbell left the building before the situation was fully resolved. Sources further stated that she was later contacted and asked to return to assist administrators and law enforcement as they worked through the aftermath but did not return.
Later that evening, Hubbell posted a message on Facebook addressing the incident. In the post, she wrote that she and others were safe after leaving and had gone to Monticello, adding that one person with her was “hugely entertained by the whole thing” as they counted police cars and an ambulance while leaving town. She concluded the post by stating she was “mostly disgusted.”
This is completely unacceptable. She not only should not have made that post, but she also should not have left the scene and should have remained there to take care of things as any school administrator should.
. It is absolutely shameful that she not only left the premises before the situation was handled by law enforcement and tournament administrators, but also that she posted this after she got to Monticello.
Social media exploded Sunday when the post began getting around with people from around the state demanding she be held accountable for her actions. Quite frankly, she should be.
The England athletic teams have been involved with numerous fights this year in multiple sports. When coaches across this state speak of teams they worry about playing because of the possibility of a fight breaking out England leads the way.
Fights continue to happen over and over again with this athletic program and the Superintendent saying it was “greately entertaining” does not pass the smell test. Her leaving the scene before making sure everything was handled does not pass the smell test.
Accountability has to happen, and it has to begin at the top within the England School District.
