Future Razorback Jackson Free Dominates Arkansas Cross Country Landscape
Dominance is often measured in wins and championships, but Jackson Free’s high school career redefined what it means to control the sport of cross country in Arkansas.
Now signed with the University of Arkansas, Free leaves the prep ranks after building one of the most commanding résumés in state history.
Free won nine of his 10 races on Arkansas soil, including a perfect senior season that saw him go 5-for-5 while breaking the state record twice. His performances weren’t just victories — they were statements, often separating him from the field by wide margins.
His only loss in the state came at the nationally recognized Chile Pepper Festival in 2024, where he placed eighth against elite competition. A year later, he returned and left no doubt, winning the event while posting the fastest time ever recorded by an Arkansan at the meet and the second-fastest time in the event’s history.
Across Arkansas, Free’s name is etched into record books. He set course records at Bentonville, Mountain Home and Alma, while also owning the fastest and second-fastest times ever recorded on Arkansas soil. His top mark stands as the fastest time ever run by an Arkansan at any location.
At the championship level, Free’s dominance was just as evident. He led his program to back-to-back Class 5A state titles, sweeping both the individual and team championships in each season.
Race after race, Free didn’t just compete — he controlled outcomes. His consistency, speed and ability to deliver in championship moments placed him in a category few Arkansas runners have reached.
As he heads to Fayetteville to join one of the nation’s premier distance programs, Free’s high school career stands as a benchmark for excellence — a reminder of what sustained dominance looks like on Arkansas courses.
